Member Highlight – Abstractor: Karen R. Brown
Meet Karen R. Brown –
If you’ve spent much time in a North Mississippi courthouse, there’s a good chance you’ve crossed paths with Karen R. Brown — or at least heard her warm laugh and friendly conversation with staff and fellow abstractors. Karen is the owner of North MS Abstract, LLC in Batesville, Mississippi, a business she launched on January 1, 2023, after more than two decades in the title industry. She handles title searches for residential and commercial properties across the region, bringing accuracy, thoroughness, and a personal touch to every search.
Karen’s abstracting career began in 1993 while working for a law firm, where her boss encouraged her to enroll in the Delta State University Paralegal Program. “I began going to the courthouse to help my boss do title searches and pull documents,” she recalls. After transferring to Ole Miss and taking a real estate/title search class, “I knew I’d found my path.”
Since then, she’s worked in law firms, spent nearly 21 years with a Flowood title company, and now runs North MS Abstract, handling both residential and commercial properties.
Fun Fact: One of the funniest property descriptions she’s ever seen? “Go to the brown cow and go north.”
Known for her professionalism and big-hearted personality, Karen says, “I believe in treating people the way I want to be treated, whether it’s a client, courthouse staff, or another abstractor. Respect goes a long way.” That mindset has earned her a strong reputation and lasting relationships throughout the industry.
Biggest Accomplishment: Karen says her proudest moment in the industry came when she signed the paperwork to open her own company. “It was a leap of faith, but I knew I had the experience, relationships, and determination to make it succeed,” she says. “Every day since has been proof that it was the right decision.”
Outside the office, Karen enjoys time with her husband of nearly 20 years, their children, and two grandsons. She plays the organ and piano at Faith Tabernacle United Pentecostal Church and has been playing piano for 50 years. “I’m a talker,” she laughs. “My husband says that’s why he hired me on — so I could do the talking for both of us!”
Fun Fact: She can quote Steel Magnolias start to finish without missing a beat.
