Member Highlight – Underwriter: Sweetie C. Greer
A “Mississippian through and through,” Sweetie Greer was born in Vicksburg and raised in Jackson. She attended Jackson Prep and received a B. S. Degree from Millsaps College. Sweetie met her husband, Charles Greer, while he was a student at the Mississippi College School of Law. Shortly after the two of them were married in 2004, they moved to Hattiesburg.
Although Sweetie held several management and sales positions with large companies, she dipped her toe into the title industry by preparing 1099 reports for the family title business. She expanded from there to help with reconciliation of files and the trust account and slowly worked her way into handling escrow functions and software issues and developing relationships with real estate agents and lenders. In 2019, she accepted a position with First American Title Insurance Company as State Agency Representative and has been assisting the company’s agents with experience she gained through being in their shoes. Working for a Fortune 500 company with agents across the country allows Sweetie and First American’s Mississippi team to help agents make and receive referrals, obtain technical assistance, abstracting services, and much more.
Traveling around the state to meet with agents and see what they need is Sweetie’s favorite part of the job. “I get to spend personal time with my agents getting to know them and their families,” she says. From both an underwriter and agent’s perspective, she has learned that “no problem is too big to be fixed and there is always a solution. It just takes rolling up your sleeves and digging into it.” One challenge she notes for the industry today is the lack of young people. “Every day we have fewer abstractors, fewer closing assistants and paralegals, and fewer experienced closing attorneys,” she observes. Sweetie has helped new agents with the start of a title business from scratch and experienced agents through difficulties such as the loss of multiple employees all at once. She can think of no greater reward or accomplishment than seeing her agents thrive.
Sweetie, who currently serves as the Secretary of the Land Title Association of Mississippi, and Charles, who is Mississippi State counsel for First American, have two children – Charles E. Greer VI and Abigail Grace Greer. Charlie is a high school senior finalizing his college choice, and Abigail is a freshman who recently obtained her driving permit. As a child, Sweetie saw the Taj Mahal with her mother and grandmother and visited the Berlin Wall in Germany right after it came down. She looks forward to seeing more of the world with her family and, in the meantime, enjoys reading, crafting with her daughter, and game nights with friends.
